The image of a bondage situation with an IV and the "kink of dying", or the sick person as a "hospice whore". This sense of being dehumanized and objectified by the medical system.. absolutely visceral.

Evoked so much empathy and unease at the same time, one of your best poems for me! ❤️

The last line really pulls it all together and highlights in the reader’s mind that we usually don’t appreciate what we have until we are losing it. Even those of us that get a second chance might take the same things for granted all over again.

I also like the lines “wanting to grow old, wanting to recover, wanting to be young again”. Like the person is being pulled in multiple directions. People are always wanting to go back in time or stressed about the future. Very rarely do we live fully in the present and we miss out on things because of it.

I finally got a chance to fully read this and by golly! This poem really got me thinking. The imagery was good and it made me feel defeated and empty despite the setting of the poem being in the hospital; a place where people go for help and hope.

glad you like it, not sure about it honestly, a hard rhyme to end a poem sometimes doesn't do it for me, but I like the sentiment of it.

We don't appreciate our health until we are sick. This is very sad.

I don't know and I don't want to speculate. If he feels people need to know, he'll talk about it.
